Blue Metal (5, 10, 20mm)

Blue Metal is a quarried, crushed aggregate rock that can range in colour from blue to black. It comes in three sizes: 5 mm, 10 mm or 20 mm, and is primarily used in making concrete. Because it is a clean, crushed rock, it is also ideal for drainage, particularly around agricultural pipes. Blue metal is a popular choice for constructing driveways or paths.
10 mm and 20 mm sized rocks are typically used when making concrete. The larger 20 mm size rocks work best to bind with cement or asphalt and form a better, stronger concrete. Generally, the 5 mm size is not recommended for such tasks, as it is considered too small to provide a desired stable base.
Please note that colours can vary greatly from load to load and this is a high turnover product, so what you see one day will be different the next. If colour is specifically important to you, you may wish to inspect the material prior to delivery and on the day of delivery. We recommend getting the whole quantity at one time, for consistency.

Metal dust is a compactable dust that comes from road base. Its grading is ‘5 mm minus’ and often called crusher dust, quarter minus (1/4 inch and less) or blue quarry sand.

Metal Dust is used to create a solid base, stabilising surfaces, particularly under water tanks and artificial turf, or generally where you want to avoid using solid rocks, for a smoother finish. It’s an economical product that can also be used as a sand for laying pavers and concrete products. Crushed Sandstone primarily used for compaction under roads and in construction.
Our Crushed Sandstone comes in 75 mm minus, but often some of the rocks can be a little bigger. The larger rocks in the crushed sandstone are great when you’re after a rougher looking finish. For this reason they are not the best suited for pathways.
Crushed Sandstone is used for rural driveways. The ‘minus’ grading indicates that smaller sized particles, down to dust, are also included in the mix.

DGB (Densely Graded Base) is similar to Standard Road Base but a cut above, as it is compliant with RMS specification 3051 and suitable for use a road base material under bitumen, in developments, sub-division, council roadways and so on.
It is sized at ‘20 mm minus’, which means it ranges from 20 mm down to dust in particle sizes.
For general use in pathways, driveways and gardens, where stricter compliance is not an issue, we recommend you use the Standard Road Base as a cheaper and easier alternative. It will usually suffice, unless your job specification demands DGB.

Recycled Concrete Aggregate is made for use in drainage so be aware quality and appearance vary greatly from load to load.

Recycled Concrete Aggregate comes in 10 mm or 20 mm and is manufactured from crushed concrete and/or brick. In colour it ranges from a concrete white to a mix of reds and oranges from the bricks and tiles. Every load varies greatly in colour and appearance. If the colour is of importance please inspect just prior to delivery.

Recycled Aggregates are commonly used for drainage around agricultural pipes. They are not as clean a product as Blue Metal, due to small sand and dust particles breaking off when moved or loaded. Recycled concrete aggregate is not suitable for making concrete, (use blue metal for this), and not as clean as blue metal for drainage, but nonetheless present a cheaper alternative to the blue metal used by many plumbers.

Recycled Concrete Aggregate is not recommended for paths or driveways, although some may want it for this purpose. Concrete contains steel, and while manufacturers remove as much steel as possible they cannot remove it all. As the concrete comes from building sites they may some glass and other building material. While these components can be fine in drainage, they are not suitable for your pathways or driveways.

Please note that every load will vary greatly in colour. If the colour of the product is important to your project, we recommend you come to inspect the product before delivery.
